Dean was born in Edinburgh in 1969, with full sight. At the age of 9, whilst living in the North East of England, Dean’s sight unexpectedly dropped. At that point he was registered as “partially sighted”. In 1996, whilst living in Devon, Dean’s sight got even worse, and he was now “registered blind”. Since an initial tandem skydive in 1998, Dean has notched up over 130 activities around the world, ranging from adventure racing to zorbing, and sea kayaking to the Human Catapult. He has set almost 27 world firsts in sports including open-water swimming and stand-up paddle-boarding.
In August 2022, full time staff nurse and athlete Robin Downie became the first person to complete the ‘Martin Moran Round’, an endurance challenge set amongst the rugged peaks and wild glens of the NW Highlands of Scotland. Inspired by the local mountains of his youth and Martin’s own record breaking Munros round back in 1984, Robin dreamt up this epic challenge to raise funds for the Martin Moran Foundation. The route, crosses over 90 km of wild, pathless terrain, with over 8,890m of ascent, and included 9 Munros and 6 Corbett’s.
Not only was Robin the first to complete this epic race, he was also the architect of this new round and we hope many more will take on this challenge.
In 2018, Jenny left family and friends behind in Scotland to become the fastest woman to cycle around the world. Alone and unsupported, she crossed the finish line at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin four months later, smashing the female record by nearly three weeks. Jenny wasn’t born into a particularly sporty family, but her childhood was full of outdoor adventures. Building dens, swimming in the sea and riding bikes – everywhere.
Her book, Coffee First brings the reader into her Round the World adventure, as she takes on four continents, 16 countries – and countless cups of coffee. Her journey swerves from terrifying near road collisions in Russia and weather extremes in Australia to breath-taking landscapes in Mongolia and exhilarating wildlife encounters in North America. Tight on time and money, fixing her bike on thefly, sleeping on roadsides and often riding through the night to stay on track to complete her record-breaking mission.
