Preloved kit sale in aid of CRY – 16th – 18th August

We are hoping to turn pre-loved kit into pounds to help a charity dedicated to preventing young cardiac deaths.

In line with our sustainability aims, we will be holding a pre-loved kit sale across their entire weekend festival of sport. Our Event Director, Richard Pearson, will be encouraging athletes and his local community to bring preloved kit in good condition to the festival for sale in aid of CRY – the leading heart charity for the prevention of young sudden cardiac death.

The sale will take place on the weekend of 16, 17th and 18th August when around 1,000 athletes will descend on Aberfeldy and Kenmore for a weekend of sport – running on Friday night at the Drummond Hill Trail Race; swimming on Saturday at Go Swim Loch Tay; and culminating in the Aberfeldy Middle Distance Triathlon on Sunday 18th August.

The sale will be located at the Pavilion at the Kenmore Recreation Ground on Friday and Saturday where the Drummond Hill Trail Race is taking place. On Saturday, there will be a table at the Triathlon Registration at the Breadalbane Community Campus and on Sunday, there will be a stall at the Event Village in Wade Park.

Richard says: “A pre-loved kit sale is a great idea for recycling kit and for athletes to pick up a bargain! It sits well with our sustainability aims and has the added benefit of raising money for CRY – a charity that we have supported for a number of years.”

Richard adds: If anyone is coming to the event and has outdoor gear that they are no longer using, please donate it to us! Old kit often will have a second life and we would be looking for outdoor jackets, good quality clothes, camping kit, tents, sleeping bags, outdoor swimming gear, hiking boots and any other triathlon gear that maybe taking up space in your cupboards! Please ensure that it is in good serviceable condition. Please bring it with you to the event and hand it into our registration staff.”

CRY has supported Aberfeldy Tri for several years too, by looking after an aid station at Strathtay on the bike course. Athletes will have seen their collection buckets at the event previously.

Their work remains vital. Every week in the UK, around 12 young people (anyone aged 35 and under) die suddenly from a previously diagnosed heart condition.  80% of these deaths will occur with no prior symptoms – which is why CRY is so committed to the importance of specialist, cardiac screening. CRY also funds pioneering research into the conditions that can cause young sudden cardiac death as well as providing a unique bereavement support network for all families who have been affected.

CRY’s nationwide cardiac screening programme now tests around 30,000 young people (aged 14-35) every year in the UK. Although it won’t identify all young people at risk, in Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, they have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death by 90%. This is because sport – whilst it does not actually cause sudden cardiac death – can significantly increase a young person’s risk if they have an underlying condition.

CRY’s screening programme is overseen by its Consultant Cardiologist Professor Sanjay Sharma, Professor of Inherited Cardiovascular Disease and Sports Cardiology at St George’s Hospital London. He is also the Medical Director of the TCS London Marathon. Due to Prof Sharma’s support and supervision of CRY’s screening and research team, the programme can be hugely subsidised.

Dr Steven Cox, Chief Executive of CRY told us: “CRY receives no Government funding to help us deliver our key services and therefore we’re always so grateful to the incredible generosity of individuals and organisations across the UK which allows us to test the hearts of tens of thousands of young people every year, as well as maintaining our world leading research programme and support networks.”

He added: “We are so grateful to Aberfeldy Multisport Festival for thinking of more ways to support the charity. It’s a great initiative to recycle pre-loved kit, as well as being of benefit to the athletes so I’d really like to encourage them to clear out their cupboards of their unwanted kit in the knowledge that you’ll also be supporting a great cause.”

The pre-loved kit sale will be part of the Aberfeldy Multi-Sport Festival on 16th, 17th, and 18th August. Based at Kenmore Recreation Grounds and Taymouth Marina, it forms part of a full festival line up including the Drummond Hill Trail Run on Friday 16th August at 6pm with barbecue and beer from Wasted Degrees; the Go Swim Loch Tay event at Taymouth Marina on Saturday 17th August and Aberfeldy Triathlon on Sunday 18th August which starts in Kenmore and finishes in Wade Park in Aberfeldy.
